The Great Russian scientist, famous politician and poet M.Lomonosov is severely ill. Understanding that there is not much time left for him to live, he decides to visit his beloved small native town. Taking a coach, he heads for the motherland of his ancestors. A shaky road raises thoughts and reminiscences about his days of youth, about the time when he was young and unknown, how he made first steps on his long way of the truth comprehension. He recollects early death and funeral of his mother, the repeated, and not very successful marriage of his father, hatred of stepmother, care of godfather, who gave him the books of Peter the Great, wandering monk, who taught him the fundamentals of science, Latin, and, of course, his first love.

In the film, the theme of children and the elderly, forced to adapt to the new conditions of the perestroika period, sounds shrill. The plot is based on just one day in the life of two teenage brothers and a lonely old woman.

Drawing from his experience as a fire-lookout in the Sequoia forests of the Sierra Nevada in California, Armand Yervant Tufenkian constructs a careful study of the visual documentation of forest fires. Shot on 16mm but bringing together various media technology (from painting to photography to surveillance webcams) and modes of representation, In the Manner of Smoke moves back and forth between California, where Tufenkian’s camera scans the landscape, and London, where artist Dan Hays is observed as he meticulously reproduces, painting pixel by pixel, blown-up webcam footage from the look-out cabin, including images from a particularly devastating fire in 2015 when the landscape choked with smoke for several days. “Reverie and observation forge relations among a landscape painter in London and a veteran fire lookout in California […] the film forms an ecology of images from distinct and ultimately interlinked perspectives.”

The adventures of the little monkey Nuki, who was brought from Italy as a gift to a fat, spoiled boy. Having escaped from an unpleasant house, the monkey gets to a kind girl. But then it turns out that Nuka has been stolen, and her real mistress is a little sick girl suffering from the loss of her pet.
